Citizens & Scholars invests in the brightest minds and innovative ideas that strengthen our democracy. Since 1945, we have reviewed countless Fellowship applications and gained invaluable insights. Here, our expert team shares their top tips and tricks to help you successfully navigate the application process. Read on to maximize your chances of securing a higher education fellowship.

What is a fellowship?

Applying for higher education fellowships can be a meaningful step in your academic and professional journey. Fellowships provide funding for projects or research that contribute to the advancement of an academic discipline. They help enhance your professional reputation as a scholar and enable you to develop new skills. Fellowships also open doors to resources and invaluable networks, like our network of 27,000 Fellows.

Before you start your search…

  • Be clear on what you’re looking for: Define your goals and what you hope to achieve with the fellowship.
  • Be clear about your why: How does pursuing a fellowship align with your personal and professional interests and aspirations?

How to identify fellowships you’re eligible for

  • Build relationships with faculty and administrators. These individuals often receive notifications about fellowship opportunities. Set up meetings with university advisors to discuss your interests and seek their guidance.
  • Tap into online resources. Research foundations and organizations that offer fellowships in your field. Other good starting points are places like ProFellow and university websites.
  • Be sure to look at the bios of individuals you admire. Investigate the paths and projects of past awardees in your field. This can provide insight into suitable fellowships and successful application strategies.

“Be intentional and explicit with your professors and advisors about your interest in a Fellowship. Faculty don’t know what you’re planning after you complete their course unless you tell them. Like many things in life, it’s important to voice your interest rather than assume. Speaking up may land you not only knowledge of opportunities but also a great recommender!”

Prep your materials

It’s never too early to start preparing. Keep an eye out for and participate in information sessions. These sessions often include critical details about eligibility and application tips. You can also review FAQs and press releases of cohorts from past years to understand what reviewers are looking for.

Before you’re ready to apply, gather the required documents:

  • Personal statements: Craft a compelling narrative about your background, goals, and why you’re a good fit.
  • Fellowship proposal: Clearly outline your project or research plans.
  • Letters of recommendation: Choose recommenders who know you well, preferably in a professional setting. Ideally, choose those within your field who can speak to your qualifications.
  • Resume/CV and transcripts: Ensure these are updated and accurately reflect your achievements.

I can’t emphasize enough how important the selection of recommenders is to your application. Choose early! Most faculty set for themselves a max number of recommendations each semester. Don’t assume they will be able to accommodate a last-minute request. Choose wisely! Recommendation letters may tip the scale in favor of your application. Make sure you are selecting recommenders who can speak to your personal strengths. Follow up! Remind your recommender of the program, due date, and any special details particular to you.

Get ready to apply

It may seem obvious, but every year we receive submissions from applicants who take the time to complete an application but unfortunately do not meet the minimum eligibility requirements. Read the program’s webpage thoroughly. Confirm that you are eligible, and your project is a true fit for the funding program.

If you’re ready to proceed, spend ample time with the application and prioritize quality. Pay careful attention to each component. Reviewers want to understand who you are and how you stand out from your peers. Write clearly and concisely to explain your academic interests and career plans.

Apply early! Don’t let the submission deadline be your deadline. Submit your application ahead of time to avoid last-minute technical issues. Give your recommenders as much notice as possible so that they can submit your letters before the due date.

Prepare for the interview

Fellowship finalists are often interviewed by a panel of experts from a variety of fields. If you’ve made it this far, congratulations! Now, it’s time to practice your pitch. Be ready to discuss your project, goals, and how the fellowship will help you achieve them. Brainstorm a list of possible questions and rehearse with peers and mentors – but also know that you may be asked questions you can’t anticipate.

Remember that your interview is a chance to give the committee a better sense of who you are. It’s an opportunity to prove that you are a promising scholar who’s proposing an exciting project with a far-reaching impact. Confidence, honesty, clarity, and passion for your work are what make a good impression.

By following these steps, you can enhance your chances of being selected for your dream fellowship. At Citizens & Scholars, our goal is to ensure every applicant successfully completes and submits their application. For further assistance, please reach out to the program officer or administrator. Good luck!

“Interviews are an excellent opportunity to show passion for your work and excitement about the potential impact. The interview committee is looking for something not evident in the written application, resume, and/or project description. Interviewees should remember to be concise and enthusiastic!”
